Avesnois – Thiérache
The Avesnois and Thiérache regions are green, hedged farmlands with a wealth of biodiversity: forests, meadows, hawthorn hedges, marshes and ponds.
Dairy farming produces famous cheeses such as Maroilles, Boulette d’Avesnes and Dauphin.
In the Avesnois region, mills, cast-iron and wrought-iron dance halls, abbeys, brick and bluestone oratories can all be discovered at the turn of a road or village. In the Thiérache region, fortified churches dating from the 16th and 17th centuries can be veritable fortresses, like those at Wimy and Autreppes.

The 4 stages of the section « Avesnois – Thiérache »
After Maubeuge, the route passes through a landscape of hedged farmland where you can discover churches, bandstands, dance halls, mills and the economic activities of yesteryear revealed by the earthenware and pottery museum at Ferrière-la-Petite and the glass museum at Sars-Poteries.
From Liessies to Trélon, the route passes through the beautiful Abbé-Val-Joly national forest.
The route then bends towards Fourmies, where the Musée du Textile et de la Vie sociale (Textile and Social Life Museum) bears witness to the textile industry, which was very important until 1950.
This stage continues along the Axe vert de la Thiérache to Guise. Fortified churches, mills still mark this beautiful hedged farmland route. A visit to the Familistère de Guise, a “social palace” for housing workers built in the 19th century by Jean-Baptiste-André Godin, is a must.
