  • In Villeneuve-le-Roi, the official Scandibérique route continues along the left bank of the Seine and uses the Ablon locks footbridge, which is impassable with a loaded bicycle!
  • Between Juvisy and Ris-Orangis, do not follow the signs on the left bank of the Seine due to a lack of cycle facilities on the Première Armée Française bridge – work in progress. The route then runs alongside the RN7, which is a decent but noisy cycle path. Follow the route on the right bank indicated on the map, which is simple, direct and quiet.

The official Scandibérique route passes under the Villeneuve-le-Roi bridge and heads towards Ablon. Crossing the Ablon Dam is very difficult due to the steep stairs. On the other side, there is a device to force cyclists to dismount from their bikes to avoid riding down the stairs. This device is impractical for bikes with panniers or cargo bikes.

Arriving from the Bondy footbridge on the cycle path on the right bank of the Ourcq Canal, you reach Paris at the Bassin de la Villette.

At the Stalingrad roundabout, follow the Saint Martin Canal to Place de la République.

We finally reach the Seine at the edge of the Marais via shared lanes (bus lanes or lanes with a speed limit of 30 km/h).

You should be careful when crossing large crossroads.

  • Pantin: Former Grands Moulins de Paris mills renovated
  • Paris
    • Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie and Géode
    • La Villette Park and Basin
    • Saint-Martin Canal Locks
    • Sainte-Chapelle
    • Notre-Dame and Archaeological Crypt
    • The Louvre…
  • Nearby, you can visit the Pompidou Centre, the Marais district and the Place des Vosges…
There’s plenty of choice, but watch out for tourist traps.

Bustling markets and cuisine from every continent in the Saint-Martin area, with terraces around the Bassin de la Villette.

There are several bike shops along the canals and near République.

Quick question

This stage, especially from Farciennes to Charleroi, reveals once again the strong industrialisation of the region. Some industries have disappeared (steel), while others have been modernised or developed (glassmaking, aeronautics, biotechnology). Many of Charleroi’s brownfield sites are currently being rehabilitated.

Don’t miss the guided walks offered by the Maison du tourisme des pays de Charleroi.

At Auvelais, go over the top of the bridge. Crossing the Tamines bridge takes you back to the right-hand side of the Sambre via the roundabout.

At Marcinelle, beware of the many metal shavings and nails of all calibres at the disused Duferco-Carsid landing stage! A notorious site for punctures!

After the Charleroi ring road, cross the Sambre as far as Charleroi-sud station. Continue along the Sambre without leaving it, passing between the unforgettable factories as far as Marchienne. Cross the bridge, turn right to go under it and continue along the towpath to a footbridge. Then go straight on.

Charleroi (Marcinelle) :

  • The Bois du Cazier site :  ilisted on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside Wallonia’s three other major mining sites, the Bois du Cazier illustrates the memory, conditions and immigration of the working class.
Thanks to the awareness-raising work carried out around the Tragedy of 8 August 1956, no one can any longer ignore the power of this tangible and intangible heritage. The site comprises three museums.
  • Museum of Industry (coal mining, steelmaking, glassmaking, metal and electrical engineering)
  • Museum of Glass
  • Museum of Fine Arts (notably industrial landscape paintings by Pierre Paulus)
  • Maison Dorée (a notable example of Art Nouveau)

Charleroi (Mont-sur-Marchienne) : Museum of Photography (exceptional collection)

Charleroi (Marchienne-au-Pont) : chapel boat (right bank)

Markets :

  • Charleroi (Marcinelle) Wednesday,
  • Charleroi (Marchienne-au-Pont) Tuesday,

Namur – Auvelais

Namur – Auvelais

I have a question

The towpath that follows the meandering Sambre between Namur and Floriffoux bears witness to a major industrial park. Then it’s on to more rural surroundings, with a diversion to Floreffe Abbey, built on a promontory, offering a remarkable viewpoint. Before arriving in Auvelais, we return to an industrial environment with the famous Moustier glassworks and the Solvay chemical plants.

Châtellerault – Poitiers

The route follows the V41 cycle route – the St James’s Way cycle route via Chartres – which is currently being developed along this section. It passes through numerous tourist attractions : the Gallo-Roman theatre at Naintré, the site of Moussais-la-Bataille (the probable location of the Battle of Poitiers in 732), Lake Saint-Cyr, ideal for a relaxing break, and Futuroscope.

Poitiers, the “city of a hundred bell towers”, invites you to stroll through its medieval streets, its many parks or along the banks of the Boivre and Clain rivers.
