Guise – Vadencourt – Ribemont

Guise – Vadencourt – Ribemont

On leaving Guise, via the voie verte, you reach Vadencourt, continuing to follow the Oise.

From Macquigny to Origny-Sainte-Benoite, a new greenway built on the old railway line follows the Oise. This very natural route is well worth the diversions.

At Guise, a more direct variant through the plateau joins the route at Macquigny.

This stage continues  along the Axe vert de la Thiérache to Guise. Fortified churches, mills still mark this beautiful hedged farmland route. A visit to the Familistère de Guise, a “social palace” for housing workers built in the 19th century by Jean-Baptiste-André Godin, is a must.

Bonn – Euskirchen

Bonn – Euskirchen

Bonn is the former capital of West Germany (1948-1991). The Bethoveen House, the botanical garden at Poppelsdorf Castle and the architecturally stunning Bundeskunsthalle museum are good reasons to visit the city.
You leave the banks of the Rhine at Mehlem and climb towards the Eifel massif. A little before Meckenheim, the town of a thousand apple trees, you pass Gudenau Castle surrounded by its wide moat, and at Rheinbach, you enjoy its pretty little historic centre with its traditional half-timbered houses.

Descartes – Châtellerault

Descartes – Châtellerault

In Saint-Rémy-sur-Creuse, the road is picturesque, lined with chalk cliffs dotted with cave dwellings – shelters that were popular in medieval times and later among hemp weavers from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

The wooded route follows quiet roads towards Oyré and then enters Châtellerault via a lovely greenway.

Cross the Creuse, turn left at the first road, then left onto the D5, pass St-Rémy-sur-Creuse, then turn right onto the D22a, then left (towards Fosse-Blot) until you reach the D78. Continue straight ahead, then turn left until you reach Oyré.

In Oyré, head towards Ingrandes for 2 km, then turn left onto Rue de la Vollinière. Follow the minor roads until you reach the D161, where you turn left; once you reach the D910, take Allée d’Argenson, which runs alongside it until the first set of traffic lights. Cross the main road, Rue Louis Blériot; at the end, turn left for 1 km, then right onto the cycle path until you reach the railway bridge, which you should take to cross the Vienne and join Eurovelo 3 on the other bank.

At the first roundabout before Châtellerault, cross the road just before it, walk along the pavement for 20 metres, then follow the path opposite that runs alongside a wall until you reach the cycle path that follows the River Vienne.
